WELCOME TO FLOW

My name is Chris Joy, I am the Executive Director at FOR LOVE OF PEOPLE and this is my blog; FOR LOVE OF WRITING.

I chose to name this blog FLOW because I truly do love the practice of writing for the freedom of expression it provides, and the way writing helps me process my emotions and experiences.

In these articles, I will share lessons I learned in the past, how I am finding peace in the present, and the dreams I have for the future.

I am not a spiritual guru and I am not a financial advisor. I am not a medical doctor and I am not a mental health counselor. I am an artist and I am a creator. I am a chaplain and I am a writer.

What has worked for me may not always work for you. These are my opinions and my experiences. The ideas presented are my ideas, the stories I tell are from my life, and everything I write is true.

Your loved one is gone and nothing can bring them back. But there are some tools I have learned that can help you move forward and provide some relief to your pain.

I am an Interfaith hospital/hospice chaplain, I have attended over 1000 deaths (2019-2022) and provided spiritual and emotional support to large numbers of patients and families. If you lost someone close to you, trust me when I say I know what you are going through.

Living Sober is Hard.

The first thing I need to say about living sober is that it's fucking hard. Anyone who tells you otherwise is either naive, from another planet, or they are delusional.

Let’s be completely honest, at least in the US where I live, alcohol is woven so deeply into the American fabric, so ridiculously normalized and over-consumed, that if you happen to choose a sober path, you will often feel like a cat along dogs, completely out of place, seeing the world from a completely different reality…

A FAMILY RESTORED: PART II

To begin, have you ever wonderer what it up with the dividing up of the families any time there is big gathering? Church potlucks, community BBQs, even at weddings and family reunions, we all get split up into little groups? If you watch carefully, you will almost notice there is a natural segregation of men, women, and children. Why? As the crowds get larger, more small clicks develop and start to get more specific. Sports fans will huddle around the big game of the day. Foodies will graze the snack table. Why? I do not believe it is for our best to divide in most circumstances, or even for our good. On the other hand, I have found that almost every event or activity is more fun when you include women and children. Diversity in all ways is typically a good thing in my view.

A FAMILY RESTORED: PART I

We took this Disneyland photo in January of 2015, right at the beginning of our change. At this point, my family was like a bag of M&Ms sitting on the dashboard in the car on a hot sunny day. We were able to maintain our fresh candy-coating just barely well enough to hold in the melting contents, but any sudden pressure and we could burst. We gave the impression that we were doing great when really we were having hard times at home. After the weekly Bible studies would clear out and all our friends would leave, we would almost collapse in exhaustion from keeping up the act that we were the perfect family.

Born Again.

What does it really mean to be born again? This is of course the key selling point to the gospel that the Christian church declares right? I wanted to take some time and look at this doctrine of regeneration because I believe this is one place the church has exploited and just down right oversold.

I never want to mislead any readers, so let me be direct and clearly state my claim. I believe the current system of American Christianity as we know it today is terribly broken. While there are several elements to this break, I want to focus today on what I believe to be one of the biggest problems: the misrepresentation of the transformation.

Broken.

This world is hard and it will try to break you. Sometimes we find ourselves beatdown and broken, ready to give up. Most days we are strong enough to take the blows, one at a time and able to recover in between lashings. Everybody has good days and bad days, ups and downs. But for some of us, there are those times in life when everything seems to fall apart at once. When that happens, most people don’t survive.

This almost happen to me, but I was spared. I almost lost the my own war on drugs again after years of peacetime. I was able to keep my life patched together just well enough to give the appearance of progress, but it only took a compilation of disasters to put me on my back, hopeless and helpless, close to certain death. Let me tell you the story…

Fatherless.

Some memories in life, you know you will have forever, whether you like it or not. A day that regularly haunts me is my 37th birthday. This was the first time in my life that I ever talked to my father. This was supposed to be the day we talk for the first time, cry together, and then live happily ever after. I This was my chance to finally have a father and for the first time not be a Bastard. I have imagined this moment so many times in my life it’s not even funny.

HOW WE BECAME FLOP

When I tell people the name of our organization, I often get a confused look.. Followed by a long silent pause.. implying a question like: “What? Why did you name your organization FLOP?” At which point I usually explain that FLOP is short for our full name: FOR LOVE OF PEOPLE. Then I get a light sigh of relief and I am able to explain our mission, but I rarely get to tell the story behind FLOP. Well, since this will be my first official blog post as Executive Director for FLOP, I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to share the story behind the name and to go deeper into our vision and what we plan to accomplish.

Prison Dreams.

It’s 5am on a Wednesday morning, and like usual, I’m wide awake. Why am I up so early every morning?… prison dreams. I have these terrible nightmares about being in prison almost every night. It used to be here and there, but they have gotten worse lately. I have had them ever since I was a kid and was locked up in my first youth prison at age 13. I am almost 40 now and have not even been arrested in 18 years… but I do time every night.

NATURE IS THE REMEDY FOR YOUR WINTER BLUES

This time of year can be the hardest to find ways to improve your mental health and boost the overall vibe of your house. For me, it seems no matter how hard I try, after the holidays and the New Year, I find that we are sitting around way too much as a family. My wife and I have four boys and the six of us can get a case of “Cabin Fever” during the Pacific Northwest (PNW) winters that will turn toxic if I don’t address it.

In this article, I will share my experience with the Winter Blues and some tips so you can reset the vibe in your house. This shift will restore your family’s mental health and sense of emotional resilience, and it doesn’t take long before everyone in your house will start to feel better.

First Year Down The Rabbit Hole.

The most common metaphor used to explain the phenomenon that you experience when you discover Bitcoin for the first time is taken from Alice in WonderLand, when Alice discovers an entire new world thru a rabbit hole. There really is no better way to describe the curiosity you feel as you venture thru this new space realizing you have almost no frame of reference for this place.

Everything is new or at least has the potential to change. You never see things the same after you take that first trip down the Rabbit hole, and that’s a good thing. I want to practice my writing craft and talk about my journey thru this space the last year and share what I have learned.

*THIS IS NOT FINANCIAL ADVICE.

Finally Fit.

I grew up a fairly normal kid, fitness wise, and just slid under the radar of being a fat kid. In grade school, I was usually sporting a pretty nice fat roll with love handles to match, but my mom told me it was just baby fat, assuming I was just husky, and to ignore the kids at school. For the most part, that worked and in middle school, the baby fat finally wore off and thanks to puberty, I started to slim out quite a bit. When I turned 13, I was locked up in a youth camp where I started lifting weights and running long distances. Within a year, I was transformed into a lean machine and loved it. I spent most of my teenage years as a skinny kid, most summers with my shirt off, quite proud of my new physique.

My Faith Journey.

I was not raised in the church but was always taught to believe in God. We occasionally said grace before big meals and prayers before bedtime, but that was about the extent of my religious experience as a child. I never saw anyone reading a Bible, or even owning a Bible or other religious books. We did not go to church accept for a rare occasion near a holiday, or if my mom needed help with the bills. I do remember the church helping out my mom and I a lot when I was a kid with utility bills, rent, firewood, food and clothing, and even toys for me at Christmas time.

New Paradigms.

Have you ever had a true paradigm shift? This has likely happen only a few times in your life and it’s an experience you will never forget. It’s as if the whole world seemed to change and everything was different from that day forward. Somehow, you remember this moment like it was yesterday, able to recall details perfectly, because this moment changed your life forever. I’m talking about an event that changes the trajectory of your future. When you look back at your life as a whole, it is these events that serve as pivot points for major transitions in your life.

Evidence will be clear in drastic lifestyle changes. Substantial chunks of your every day will be redirected. Hobbies will be rebranded to fit the new mold or abandoned altogether. New dreams are made, new goals are set, and values are birthed. Painfully, your core friends will change, new relationships will be made, others will be let go. You experience a total life transformation. This is what I mean by paradigm shift. Everything in your world changes. It’s these changes that make us who we are.

Held By Angels.

This may be impossible but I want to try to go way back into my childhood and tell one of my earliest painful stories. I estimate I must have been about four or five years old because I don’t think I had started school yet. I can see myself as a little boy that night in the early 1980s, with dark brown hair, in an over-grown bowl cut that hung down past my eyes.

The Youth Of Oregon Need Our Help.

In 2003, the number of youth incarcerated in the United States was 96,531. This number should take your breathe away because this is a massive amount of children! To put this into local perspective, this is six times more children than all of the kids in the Eugene 4J School District, which as of today is over 16,000 according to their website. Imagine six times the kids in Eugene all incarcerated! There is good news however, as of 2015 that number has been reduced by over 50% to 48,043. This is an unbelievable accomplishment! This is still far more kids than I want to see locked up, especially considering 73% of those incarcerated in 2015 are charged with non-violent offenses.
