KNOW YOUR MEMES KNOW YOUR MONEY

Let’s Talk About Memes!

Memes have been around for a long time! But today more than ever, you need to understand some basics about memes. We have OG meme coins that ran to $75+ Billion market caps in the last cycle. New meme coins are tearing to $100+ Million market cap within a month of launch almost every day.

Most important of all, just this month, meme coins launched on Bitcoin! This is the most recognized, decentralized, and secure blockchain of all. This is all possible under a brand new protocol, called Runes.

We saw what meme coins can do on Ethereum and Solana, just imagine the possibilities on a chain whose market cap is $1.25 Trillion! Do I have your attention now? If not then you NGMI.

We all know this guy right? The cheeky mfer offering financial advice with nothing to back it up. If you see bros like this shilling a token or NFT, it's a top signal and prob time to sell. 🚩

Where did the word “meme” come from and what are they?

This word is literally ancient! And comes to us from the Greek term “mimoúmai,” which means “to imitate.” This was often a kind of instruction or command used by a Master or teacher to their students or disciples, about beliefs, behaviors, and character. (*This Greek word is used this way 6 times 2000 years ago in the New Testament.)

While the concept of memes is ancient, It was not until 1976 when a British evolutionary biologist named Richard Dawkins coined the phrase to explain how a self-replicated chunk of information contributes to natural selection, similar to genes or genetics. Dawkins chose the term “meme” “to convey the idea of a unit of cultural transmission, or a unit of imitation.” (There are YouTube videos of him explaining how he believes the memes, or ideas people replicate, are a kind of Natural Selection likened to genes and genetics.)

But that was almost 50 years ago and the way we use and understand the term since 1976 has definitely evolved.

Maybe this definition from meme legend, Saint Hoax is more helpful, who told the NY Times that “a meme is a piece of media that is repurposed to deliver a cultural, social or political expression, mainly through humor.”

I love this meme by Saint Hoax because it points out that we all know the struggle when your friends are too demanding and don't get your vision. Even Jesus.

Or to say it in other words, “A meme is just an idea that rips through the public consciousness.” D. Andrew Price (head of content at Memes.com)

What makes a meme great?

While we all have our favorite memes, I find it interesting that nobody really hates great memes. I think this is because the greatest memes cross all the cultural walls we put up and connect with people on a fundamental level.

We know what it feels like to feel the heat of conviction…

We know what it feels like to have a sudden change of direction…

This has nothing to do with how much money you have, where you live, or the colors on your flag. Yes, all great memes need to get your attention and be easily understood within a few seconds, but there is more to it.

Great memes unite us on a fundamental level as an idea from one person is communicated to others, causing an emotional reaction, which replicates from person to person.

This is amazing if you really stop and think about it and it brings to mind an interesting concept. 💡 You can almost say the way memes replicate themselves from one human psyche to another, is similar in a way to the blockchain..⛓️

A blockchain node is a device, usually a computer, that runs a blockchain's algorithm to verify and authenticate transactions.

This is a hard analogy to pull off but for the degens reading.. I think this comparison is spot, but needs a little clarification..

So lets say a person creates a meme and posts it on the internet. This is like making a transaction on the Blockchain. Then as people like and share that meme, the meme is self-replicating and becomes stronger with every engagement. On the blockchain, transactions are confirmed by thousands of independent nodes around the world until enough confirmations have been made and the transaction is etched into the blockchain.

Now this is where it gets important..📢 the same thing happens to the memes when they get passed around the world. Once the meme gets enough confirmations, meaning enough people see it, like it and share it, the meme literally gets etched into history indefinitely.

I wonder which meme coins & runes will be etched into history permanently?

Memes tell a story and provide a narrative that draws us in and calls us to be a part of something greater than ourselves. When we copy the meme we become a part of that narrative. This is not just our story. This is the Human Story. The memes actually provide a unique point of view to the story of humanity that is often over-looked without knowledge and awareness of memes.

What about Memes and Money?

Let's cut to the chase here and talk specifically about how understanding meme coins and runes applies to money because that was what I promised in the hook and I don't want to disappoint.

In a nutshell, I believe memes and money have always gone together and always will go together. Just open your physical wallet look at the bills and notice the memes. If you are holding USD, you will see pictures of men who we are supposed to remember and revere. The memes are almost all we have to go with the stories we learned in school about how America began. The memes on the money are there to support the narrative of the nation.

I have a large collection of physical currencies from all around the world and almost every coin or bill has an image that is connected to a narrative and is telling the story of the country who made it. I even have coins with symbols i would never print myself because of the violence and evil the memes went on to represent. I think this is an important point about memes, they tell the story people passed around at the time. Sometimes it may be a lie that everyone believed, but the meme still stands and gets etched into human history.

How to decide what Memes & Runes you like?

📢This goes without saying, but I will say it anyways to be direct. I am not a financial advisor and to be honest not even the best investor, so please do not take any of this as financial advice. I am trained in graphics and theology, not finance. I am only sharing my experience and understanding of memes. I am purely speculating that meme coins and runes will increase in value, but it is possible I am completely wrong and they will evaporate tomorrow.

When I am thinking about meme coins and wondering which ones have the potential to make it long-term, I am not just looking at volume, liquidity, utility.. I'm asking myself questions like these about the memes.

  1. Is this meme funny and can i understand the message in 2-3 seconds?

  2. Does this meme cross cultural boundaries and connect with all people on a fundamental level?

  3. Does the meme have the power of attraction to bring people together into a community?

  4. Can this meme be used as a catalyst for social and political expression?

  5. What is the narrative or story that the meme is telling?

Remember: The memes you support today will be etched into the future so choose memes and runes that reflect a world you want to live in.

There is a lot more to say about memes, runes, and meme coins, but my time is up. I am aware this length is a stretch for X Article, and I want to sincerely thank you for reading. Hopefully, this will give you some things to think about as you observe the current meme coin craze and rune mania.
